About
A defining Hamilton Holmes design, the Shoreman’s Bench brings sculpted solid wood, exposed joinery, and hand-woven Danish cord together in a light, architectural form.
The legs meet the rails through a distinctive three-way joint, with wedged tenons driven through a bridle intersection. This complex connection gives the frame its strength while leaving the construction visible as a central part of the design.
The seat is woven by hand directly onto the solid wood frame using Danish cord. Its taut, rhythmic surface creates a lighter counterpoint to the substantial hardwood construction while remaining comfortable, durable, and practical for everyday use.
The Shoreman’s Bench was Nicholas Holmes’s first serious furniture design, originally developed and built in his basement workshop. It brought together his growing interest in traditional solid-wood joinery with weaving techniques drawn from his earlier practice of knitting and designing original textile patterns.
Its gently sculpted frame and balanced proportions allow the bench to work in a range of settings—from an entrance hall or the foot of a bed to seating alongside a dining table. Every surface is shaped and finished to emphasize the natural character of the selected wood.
Available in solid walnut, white oak, ash, or red oak, with a selection of Hamilton Holmes finishes.
