OXALINO™ Cloud Drip Cabinet

Transcript

“This is a big, solid wood cabinet. It's made of solid white oak. It's actually almost an inch and three quarters thick, but we've, uh, rebated around the edge, so it looks a lot thinner. You can see inside it's, it's very thick, quite robust. We've intentionally used riffs on grain here on the front so that this pattern will, will roll over.

The case is mitered and then splined with dovetail splines. My goal for this piece was to create a form that had very smooth edges, that gave a sense that something could roll off of them, and then to develop an OXALINO™ pattern that exaggerated that action. It was designed as a pretty large monolithic piece, and then the OXALINO™ pattern is part of what we're calling the third movement of OXALINO™, which is more modern, more contemporary, more monolithic. Big, bold movements versus small patterns.

So, this was designed to wrap and curl and flow over the side, create a lot of movement.

When we were debating about handles, we considered applied handles, we considered zero handles, and we ended up settling on these integrated wood handles, which have become a bit of a style icon for our studio, integrating wooden handles right into the piece.”

The process activates the oak’s natural tannins, creating marks that are chemically bonded to the wood.

This preserves the integrity of the material and keeps the grain fully present as part of the pattern.

All OXALINO™ pieces represent the highest tier of work produced at Hamilton Holmes.

Each one is built in-house using solid wood construction and traditional cabinetmaking methods, then hand-painted by Nicholas Holmes, founder, owner, and principal designer.

The surface is not applied as decoration, but developed as part of the making process, where structure and finish are resolved together.
